Hearing Great Things about Great Tangs

Great Tangs Chinese

You see what I did there in the title? Pure wit right there.

Great Tangs, a new restaurant that opened over in the Price Chopper plaza on Route 50, has been the talk of the town recently.

It’s no secret that we’ve been in dire need of a good Chinese restaurant for a long time. I enjoy my sesame chicken just as much as the next guy, but I typically avoid getting Chinese food because it’s normally disappointing and makes me feel like trash afterwards.

On a quiet Saturday night at home watching Sex and the City by myself, I couldn’t help but want to mimic the characters on the show by eating Chinese take out with chopsticks right out of the box. So I decided to give Great Tangs a try, after all the great tangs (HA I can’t stop myself) I’ve heard about the place.

Before I dive into that, let it be known that this place isn’t just a Chinese restaurant. They have a sushi bar, they offer many Japanese and Thai specialties as well. You can check out their menu here.

Alright, so I went with a combination platter of chicken and broccoli, fried rice and an eggroll. It was crucial for me to get something simple so I could accurately judge.

There are so many different things I want to point out. The broccoli was fresh and still had a nice crunch to it, the sauce that covered the chicken and broccoli wasn’t as salty and heavy as most other Chinese restaurants offer locally. The chicken looked like real chicken, which I can’t say is true for all Chinese restaurants. Eek.

The fried rice was lightly fried rather than almost burnt like I’ve had many times at other places. And the eggroll? Well that was a deliciously crispy treat for my tastebuds. Just as good warm as it was cold hours later when I finished it.

Now that Great Tangs passed my initial test, I need to go back and get something a little more complicated, but I have high hopes for this place.

Have you been yet? What are your thoughts so far?

I’ve eaten at Tangs twice. I had great hopes, but so far “meh”. Better than the other Chinese restaurants in Saratoga Springs, but much room for improvement. Hot and Sour soup wasn’t particularly spicy or flavorful. Kung Pao Chicken ordered spicy cam mild and they forgot the peanuts. I make much better Kung Pao. General Tso’s was similar. Sweet and not very flavorful or spicy. They may excel at sushi.

I’ve been there a bunch of times. It’s great for Saratoga and perfectly good in general. I think they do Chinese better than sushi (I’ll stick with duo) but the General Tsos I had was pretty punchy, the how fun noodles are really delicious (with, like, real pieces of actual meat in it!). Finally a place to get gold take out Chinese in Saratoga. It will never rival a place like A La Shanghai for autheticity but I don’t always want autheticity. Like you I want good take out that doesn’t leave me feeling gross. Great Tangs does that. Now if they’d only deliver…
